Scar Treatment
Scar Revision - Treatment of Scar
Scar revision is the process of making a scar on the body less noticeable. In our era, completely erasing or eliminating a scar is unfortunately not possible. However, it is possible to reduce the size of the existing scar, alter its shape, or conceal it in a less visible location. Therefore, it is crucial for patients considering scar revision surgery to have realistic expectations of achieving satisfactory results. If a person desires complete elimination of an existing scar, it should be communicated from the outset that this may not be achievable through surgery, and they might reconsider undergoing the procedure.
Methods Used in Scar Revision - Scar Treatment
Various techniques can be applied depending on the location, shape, duration, and characteristics of the scar on the body. Some scars in certain body areas may revert close to their original appearance even after surgery. For instance, keloid scars have a high recurrence rate even after surgery. Although the rate of recurrence can be reduced with post-operative treatments, patients in this group should seriously consider their decision before undergoing surgery.
Considerations in Scar Revision - Scar Treatment
Following surgical correction of scars, there is typically a gradual reduction in redness within three to six months at the surgical site. After this period, the scar takes on the color of the surrounding skin. Ten days after surgery, methods such as silicone gel, silicone sheeting, compression garments, or creams can be used to aid in healing. It is essential to avoid sun exposure during the first six months, especially during the period when redness is present at the treatment site.
Apart from surgery, laser treatments are also among the methods that can be used depending on the condition of the scar (scar revision).
What is Dermabrasion? Treatment of Scars, Acne Scars
While various methods have been tried for the treatment of indentations in scars (such as acne scars) on the body or face, one of the most effective solutions is dermabrasion. When performed with special tips, preferably diamond tips, dermabrasion is highly effective in smoothing out scars. Think of dermabrasion as a smoothing tool with specialized tips. This mechanical process flattens the skin surface, visibly reducing scars. Sometimes, this procedure may be repeated after some time to achieve better results.
How is Dermabrasion Applied?
Dermabrasion is a procedure that lasts about half an hour. The results obtained from dermabrasion are permanent; after healing, the previous indentations do not return. Generally, this procedure can only be performed during times when sun exposure is minimal (autumn, winter). However, using certain creams a month before the planned procedure may be necessary.
Precautions Before Dermabrasion Application
If you have had any previous treatments on your face (such as peeling, laser, medication, etc.), please inform your doctor, as adjustments may be needed in the treatment type and timing.
